Dog obedience for humans makes for better dog owners

Mar 3, 2020 | 6:04 PM

“Behind every good dog is a good dog owner.”

Those are the words of dog trainer, Heather Heddon who told meadowlakeNOW, she has been educating the community on successful ownership for over 30 years.

“I do it because I enjoy dogs and I enjoy seeing owners with good dogs,” she said.

Heddon explained good dogs require time and effort from their owners and her training is suitable for families, youth and individual adults.

“I’ve been teaching this course for many years and I’m not shy to give out my knowledge. Consequently I do a lot of talking but I also demonstrate with my dog, Paris, ” she said.

Some of her training includes discussing “door-dashing”, which is when dogs bark loudly at visitors to a residence thereby creating a tense environment. Heddon additionally focuses on teaching dogs good manners when interacting with humans and other dogs.

“We don’t try to train dogs things they can’t naturally do, but [rather] to act when the owner wants them to do it,” she said.

One session is scheduled at the Meadow Lake Library for March 12 beginning at 7 p.m..

Attendees are asked to leave their dogs at home for the one-hour session.
