Community Clean Up

Local business bringing back community clean-up promotion

With a significant amount of snow melted and washed away from the Meadow Lake area, a local business is acting fast and getting a head start on spring cleaning.

Eatery on Main is bringing back its Community Garbage Clean Up to remove waste and trash scattered in the area. The event debuted last year when Eatery created a post on Facebook informing people that they would be rewarded with a free beverage after providing proof of them filling a bag with litter. Once word of the event spread throughout the area, other local businesses and organizations including the City of Meadow Lake, chipped in to the event with prizes of their own to extend the promotion.

Kassidy Dunsing, Owner of Eatery on Main, mentioned last year’s event was well-received by the community and that significant participation is what led to the event being so successful.

“At the end of that week, we had literally picked hundreds of bags of garbage from here to Dorintosh and Loon Lake. It kind of went viral and that was super cool. This year, we’re just trying to get the ball rolling on it and really trying to get people involved right off the bat,” Dunsing said.

Currently, there aren’t any firm dates and times for this year’s event, but Dunsing expects to kick things off around Earth Day which falls on April 22. She added some businesses have begun to reach out and offer assistance with the promotion. The City will be supplying bags and gloves for people to use while participating. There is no requirement for what size of bag must be filled in order to qualify for a free beverage.

City manager Diana Burton spoke to the impact of the event saying the collective effort from residents provides a morale boost to the community while lightening the load of city workers, as well.

“It’s always nice to see people out and involved in something like this. It’s not nice to see all of the garbage floating around though,” Burton said.

“One of the things we’ve done in the past is try to organize a city-wide event like this, but Eatery beat us to it and it was very successful. We chipped in financially last year, and we will definitely be doing that again this year. It would take a lot longer to clean all of the garbage up without an event like this.”

Dunsing mentioned she is concerned with the current condition of the ditches. Some of them are still really wet and could be unsafe for those who decide to clean in that area. She explained residents who live outside of the city typically clean up those areas and hopes they do so with caution. With that in mind, Dunsing believes this year will have an even better turnout than the year before.

“I think it’ll have a huge impact. Last year, we received comments that is was the cleanest Meadow Lake has ever been, and I expect that this year will be even cleaner and top that.”

Businesses, organizations and schools that would like to participate in the clean up can contact Dunsing at (306) 845-8356.
