Saskatchewan Country Closeup – Kevin Barrett

Apr 19, 2021 | 12:15 PM

Kevin Barrett started playing piano at the age of 5. His mother, a concert pianist, and his father, a concert band trumpet player, it seemed natural that music was going to be his passion in life. In his teen years he started composing his own songs and began playing in bands with friends, after his guitarist brother talked their father into buying a Yamaha combo organ and amp for him. Playing in a band, traveling the country, composing music would be his passion and music would be his life.

He has continued to write and record music and had several songs chosen for songwriting competitions that were played on local radio stations. In 1991 he started his own band under his own name, recording his own songs and releasing a CD “Makin Movies” under the name Kevin Barrett Band, which shared the stage with Bryan Adams, Steve Miller, Extreme, Sass Jordan, Colin James among others.

His latest adventure is once again showcasing his own music, written mostly over the past 10 years. He composes from the heart and the songs are based around a wide range of experiences in his life, which comes out in a blend of country, rock and blues music.

In the last few years Kevin has teamed up with Arranger/Producer/Multi-Instrumentalist Steve Dodd, from Calgary, who he has worked with to write and record new songs. These new songs have received great interest from a variety of music industry producers and publishers both in Canada and the U.S.
