Meadow Lake’s Gorst wins Poundmaker dash in CPCA return

The first week of the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association competition wrapped up Sunday in Poundmaker Cree Nation and based on the results, the return to the sport will have a very competitive field in 2021.

Returning veteran driver Logan Gorst won the Day 4 dash, with a time of 1:15.06. Hailing from Meadow Lake, Gorst had competed in the WPCA since 2012 prior to his return to the CPCA. This puts him atop the driver standings to start this season.

Immediately following Gorst on the leaderboard is B.J. Carey of Lloydminster. A consistent top 10 finisher, Carey not only won the aggregate time for the first three days of the event but also set a new track record in Poundmaker Cree Nation at 01:14.04. The rest of the top four is rounded out by Ryan Baptiste of Cando, and Danny Ringuette of Bonnyville, Alta., was fourth.

Strong attendance also continued throughout the weekend, despite a capacity limit of 150 due to COVID-19 restrictions. This year’s return to the CPCA has 32 drivers, the most they’ve fielded in years.

The next stop for the tour is in Onion Lake Cree Nation on Wednesday, which will be a five-day event. Race times will be made available online.
