McCallum Inquest

Public inquiry into death of man in Meadow Lake RCMP custody set for July 26-30

Jul 9, 2021 | 11:24 AM

Following the death of a man being held in Meadow Lake RCMP custody, a public inquest into the incident is expected to take place later this month.

According to police, 25-year-old Trevor McCallum was found unresponsive in his holding cell at the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment on the morning of April 10, 2018. Despite medical personnel’s efforts to stabilize the man, responders declared McCallum deceased.

The inquiry, led by Coroner Brent Gough, will include an investigation to determine the details of the individual’s death, and provide the coroner with an opportunity to make a recommendation to prevent similar deaths, if necessary. A media release mentioning the Coroners Act of 1999 states the Chief Coroner can investigate inmate deaths that occur while being held in jails or correctional facilities, unless the death is considered to be natural causes.

The Saskatoon Inn and Conference Centre, located at 2002 Airport Drive, will host the inquest at 10 a.m. after a jury has been selected.
