Meadow Lake Parks and Recreation bringing back flag football

Aug 18, 2021 | 6:37 PM

Following last year’s overwhelmingly positive turnout, the Meadow Lake Parks and Recreation department has decided to bring back its flag football program for another year.

As early as next week, parents will have the opportunity to register their children to participate in flag football. The first activity is a three-hour camp on Thursday, August 26.

Manager Regan Beck explained the camp serves to educate the participants on the rules of the game, teach them fundamental skills and put them through drills that will help them develop skills and abilities to improve their gameplay. Abbreviated games will be set up once the lessons have concluded.

“Last year, we kind of put the kids on the field and let them have fun, but flag football has its own set of rules and different skill sets that kids can work on,” Beck said. “We’re bringing out representatives from Football Saskatchewan, and they’re going to help them work on their passing, catching, running and all those skills that everyone should know how to do.”

The camp will run twice on Thursday. The Grade 3 to 6 groups will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and the Grade 7 to 10 groups will run in the afternoon. The price for the camp is set at $20 and will include snacks, water, Gatorade and a tee shirt.

Once the camp has ended, the focus will shift to the six-week flag football program. This is separate from the camp, and will require its own registration and entry fee. Last year’s program had over 100 participants involved, and the board is hoping that this year will see similar numbers, if not better.

The football program is in the process of coordinating its practice and game schedules so that it doesn’t conflict with other sports programs.

“We want to make sure we make it as accessible as possible, so we’re just going to coordinate that with other groups at the same time,” Beck said.

The six-week flag football program is expected to cost around $40. Registrations for both programs can be completed by logging into the City of Meadow Lake’s registration system.
