Province reports 426 new cases, 80 per cent among unvaccinated

Another 426 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported today by the provincial government, as well as five new deaths in Saskatchewan.

Nearly a quarter of cases are among the 0-11 age range alone with 65 per cent of cases in Saskatchewan residents under 40.

Similar to previous reports, unvaccinated individuals account for 80 per cent of new cases reported in the province today.

The provincial death total now sits at 651 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 have died with a provincial case fatality rate of 1.0 per cent.

Of the new cases reported today, 133 new cases were reported in Northern Saskatchewan zones; Far North West (15), Far North East (22), North West (60), North Central (29), and North East (seven).

The province has now recorded 63,415 confirmed cases of the virus; 4,706 cases that are currently considered active and 58,058 cases are considered recovered.

Of the cases currently active, 2,028 have been confirmed in northern zones of Saskatchewan.

Around two-fifth (38 per cent) of new cases are in the age category of 19 and under.

Almost one in four (23.2 per cent) of new cases eligible for vaccination (aged 12 years and older) were fully vaccinated.

As of Sept. 22, a total of 265 individuals are hospitalized; including 211 inpatient hospitalizations and 54 ICU hospitalizations. Of the 265 patients, 201 (75.8 per cent) were not fully vaccinated.

NITHA Data

As of Sept. 21, there are 34 new cases to report in NITHA communities; 23 (68 per cent) were unvaccinated, four (12 per cent) are partially vaccinated and seven (21 per cent) were fully vaccinated.

There are 307 active cases of COVID-19 in NITHA communities.

These cases are located in the Far North Central (Athabasca), 10; Far North West, 62; Far North East, 143; North Central, 50; and North East, 42. There are 5,431 cases (94 per cent) recovered, and 12 people are hospitalized.

There are nine active cases of COVID-19 Variants of Concern (VOCs) in NITHA communities. These cases are located in the Far North Central; 0, Far North West, four; and Far North East, three; North Central, one; and North East, one.

Athabasca Health Authority (AHA)

Three new cases of COVID-19 are being reported in Fond Du Lac by the Athabasca Health Authority, bringing the total of active cases to eight in AHA as of Sept. 21.

Executive director of Primary Health Care, Taiwo Olubanwo, said in a recent press release these numbers are unexpectedly few but people still need to be vigilant.

“Although FDL has done very well in the past week in terms of recovery rate as the community is set to beat the probable CoVID-19 Outbreak as flagged about two weeks ago – we continue to encourage FDM members to take more caution as it may be too early to celebrate the progress made so far.”

There are no active cases in Black Lake or Stony Rapids which dealt with outbreaks in the past. That may change with people planning to attend upcoming funerals in Black Lake.

“We strongly encourage the Black Lake FN Community and other neighboring communities to take caution during the funeral gathering and follow all the preventative measures that we frequently share,” said Olubanwo.
