Oct 22, 2021 | 2:42 PM

Local crime reduction initiatives continue to receive provincial funding support as the City of Meadow Lake is provided $770,000 through the Municipal Police Grants program in 2021/22.

The investment will support seven existing police positions in Meadow Lake.

In a media release, Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison spoke on behalf of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell, reinforcing the commitment to providing police services resources needed in the community.

“This investment demonstrates our government’s continued efforts to prioritize public safety,” he said.

Police services across Saskatchewan receive annual support through the Municipal Police Grants program. The funding assists with filling 133 municipal police positions and targeted policing initiatives.

Also included in the release, Meadow Lake Mayor Merlin Seymour thanked the provincial government for support with the program, highlighting the important role police have on public safety.

“This grant funding allows us to support our busy detachment as they respond to local challenges,” he said.

“We appreciate the efforts our local officers have put toward gang suppression and know that this funding will help them continue this important work.”

meadowlakeNOW reached out to the Meadow Lake RCMP for further comments on the announcement, but did not receive a response at the time of publishing.
