Year in Review: Meadow Lake sports in 2021

During the Christmas season, our team at Pattison Media is once again producing positive stories based around holiday traditions and accomplishments for the region.

It was a big year for sports in Meadow Lake. After making their triumphant return following a temporary hiatus, here are some of the biggest headlines and achievements in the community.

#5 — Cody Coverchuk makes history as third multi-time Canada PBR Champion

After a very competitive professional bull riding season, the final contest of the year would see a handful of Canada’s best riders come together to battle for the top spot on the leaderboard.

Entering the competition, Meadow Lake’s Cody Coverchuk was ranked second and needed to put up an impressive performance to surpass the season’s points leader.

After an unexpected development unfolded during the competition, the landscape for the final showdown changed dramatically, setting the scene for a weekend to remember. Read more here.

#4 — Magic season for Logan Gorst wraps up in Lloydminster

In a highly competitive Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association season, there were several highly talented athletes vying for the top spot heading into the the final bout of the season.

Among those athletes was Meadow Lake’s very own Logan Gorst. Coming off of an inconsistent performance in his hometown the previous weekend, Gorst was looking to rebound in a big way at the last dance.

With all of the hard work from the season coming to this point, the renowned rider knew what needed to be done to finish the year as the best of the best. Read more here.

#3 — Dawson Gerwing drafted to the Swift Current Broncos

Meadow Lake hockey prospects continue to establish a presence in advanced leagues across the continent.

The most recent athlete to get called up to the Western Hockey League is Dawson Gerwing, a 15-year-old forward from the Battlefords Stars.

Speaking with meadowlakeNOW, the Broncos organization said the young talent offers a lot of upside that could elevate the team’s offense. Read more here.

#2 — Meadow Lake Sox win gold at provincials

In one of the final sporting events of the summer, the Meadow Lake Sox travelled to Hanley, Sask. for their last slate of action in the 2021 season.

After opening up the weekend with mixed performances, the Sox needed to find a way to rally if they wanted a shot at winning the tournament.

Over the remaining games on the schedule, the Sox found their rhythm and punched their ticket to the biggest game of the season. Read more here.

#1 — Meadow Lake welcomes back local track and field standout

A young track and field star in the prime of her athletic career travelled overseas to participate in one of the biggest sporting events of her life.

After battling against some of the best competition on the world, Avery Pearson was welcomed home by a proud crowd of the members in her community.

On the big stage, Pearson put up a personal best performance that inspired one of her coaches to speak of the astounding possibilities that may be in her future. Read more here.
