COVID-19 Update

Nine new COVID-related deaths reported in the province, total active cases exceed 12,000

Jan 21, 2022 | 2:14 PM

The province is reporting another 1,233 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today.

Of the new cases, 189 are located in the northern zones of the province; Far North West (44), Far North Central (nine), Far North East (17), North West (36), North Central (46), and North East (37).

Of the 1,233 new cases reported today, 229 were unvaccinated or fewer than 21 days after their first dose, 45 had received their first dose or were less than 21 days from their second dose, 685 were fully vaccinated (more than 14 days since their second dose) and 274 were fully vaccinated and more than 14 days from receiving their booster dose.

Nine new deaths were reported today breaking the two-week record of no new deaths in the province. One individual whose death was flagged as COVID-19 previously is no longer flagged and has been removed from the total. A total of 969 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 have died.

The province’s top doctor said the two-week span of no new deaths was because of a data issue.

The nine deaths happened in the past three weeks but hadn’t been added to the dashboard.

Dr. Saqib Shahab said it’s because a filter wasn’t refreshed properly for the new year.

Now that it’s been fixed, the deaths were officially recorded as well as dozens of previous hospitalizations and ICU admissions, resolved cases and negative PCR tests.

There are currently 12,199 cases considered active in the province.

Of the new cases in Saskatchewan, 2,148 are located in the six northern zones of the province. (Government of Saskatchewan)

Almost two-fifths (38.3 per cent) of new cases are in the age category of 20 to 39.

As of Jan. 21, a total of 215 people are in hospital, including 192 inpatient and 23 in ICU. Of the 215 patients, 71 (33 per cent) were not fully vaccinated.

The SHA dashboard includes 215 hospitalizations: 192 residents are inpatient: of those, 88 inpatient hospitalizations are a COVID-19-related illness, 89 are incidental COVID infections and 15 have not yet been determined. Twenty-three residents are in ICUs: of those, 15 are for COVID-19-related illnesses, seven are for incidental COVID infections and one is undetermined
