City seeks feedback on adding no parking signs for industrial area

Meadow Lake is looking at limiting parking in the industrial area of the city with new signage.

On Monday, city council approved the first reading of an amendment to Traffic Bylaw No. 5, which would result in “No Parking” signs being installed throughout that portion of town, in order to allow various vehicles and larger equipment to move through safely and unhindered. This is meant to address a long-standing street parking issue in the industrial area, over both property and pedestrian safety concerns.

Mayor Merlin Seymour told meadowlakeNOW that there are currently no bylaws to prevent parking which leaves concerns over vehicles parking on both sides of the streets amid heavy equipment frequently having to move through.

“There was some talk of parking off to the side where it would deteriorate,” he said. “And there are various vehicles and equipment that travel on those roads and we just want to make it safe for everyone to get through there.”

Seymour added that traffic is regularly dense making this a constant concern for drivers and operators. Having narrow streets with vehicles on both sides of the road makes regularly moving heavy equipment very difficult.

“There’s numerous businesses out in the industrial park,” Seymour said.

However, this won’t move past second and third reading without discussions with property owners. The Bylaw Enforcement Department is sending letters to those potentially affected by the amendment, who will then have till noon on April 7 to provide feedback in writing. Anything coming from those property owners will then be brought forward during the April 11 meeting where further amendments or the second and third readings would take place.

Seymour said nothing is set in stone yet on the bylaw amendment, hoping they get detailed responses from property owners.

“It will depend on what type of feedback we get from the people who have businesses out there or use it as the primary driving area,” he said.

Upon the amendment making it through third reading, Public Works would be responsible for coordinating the installation of the signage, which may have to be ordered. Once in effect, the penalty would typically be a warning for the first month or so for registered vehicles, per Bylaw Enforcement standards. Unregistered vehicles are prohibited from parking on any city street.

The exception for parking streets with the new signage will be temporary loading and unloading of vehicles already covered in the Traffic Bylaw.
