Rainfall, wind warnings in place in some areas of Saskatchewan

Areas of northern Saskatchewan remained under rainfall warnings Wednesday morning, while a wind warning was in place for the southwest corner of the province.

According to Environment Canada, heavy rains were expected in areas around La Ronge, Prince Albert National Park, Narrow Hills Provincial Park, Meadow Lake, Pierceland, Pelican Narrows, Beauval and Southend.

The weather service said the system was expected to dump 50 to 70 millimetres of rain on the areas by Wednesday evening. The rain is expected to ease Wednesday night, but wouldn’t end completely until Thursday night.

In the southwest, meanwhile, areas around Shaunavon, Maple Creek, Val Marie, Cypress Hills, Leader and Gull Lake were dealing with high winds.

Environment Canada said the winds would peak around noon Wednesday, with improvement through the afternoon and evening.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur,” the alert said. “Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

“Motorists, especially in high-profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong crosswinds.”
