Heat wave potential in the Battlefords, Meadow Lake

Aug 6, 2022 | 9:00 AM

Following another stormy evening in Saskatchewan, communities can expect summer conditions to improve for the next few weeks.

A tornado touched down near Meadow Lake around 6:30 PM on Thursday, with warnings being issued in several other areas that evening as well. Danielle Desjardins, Meteorologist with Environment Canada, said they haven’t found any significant damage near where it touched down at this time.

“We haven’t received any reports of damage yet, so we’ve given it a preliminary rating of zero, pending any updates we receive,” she said.

While Desjardins said isn’t unheard of to get multiple tornados in a Saskatchewan summer, she noted that this year has seen a higher number. Yesterday’s storm was the 20th such tornado of the past decade, above the 10-year average.

However, she added that the province is now past the peak season for tornados, with hotter and drier conditions ahead.

“The likelihood of another tornado for the next week or so is low,” Desjardins said. “It’s going down this time of year.”

Following remnant showers in the Northwest on Friday, as the system clears out, things are going to get increasingly warm and sunny this weekend. Today’s high of around 23°C in most of the northwest will give way to a full week of clear skies and very warm temperatures.

“We’re looking at a ridge building into the region, so we’re going to see the heat build in and temperatures climb in the high 20s, low 30s, for the next seven days,” Desjardins said. “Possibly a little longer.”

While the brief showers earlier in the week, the current forecast isn’t giving a chance of future precipitation for at least the next 14 days. Both the Battlefords and Meadow Lake will be in the high 20s Sunday and Monday, with a dip of a couple degrees on Tuesday and a rise to 30°C and above by Wednesday.

Overnight lows are looking very warm as well. Both Meadow Lake and the Battlefords will average above 10°C under the stars for the next week, with a low of 15°C on Wednesday evening.

Showers may have helped prior to the next two weeks, but Desjardins said conditions will be dry. Given the proximity to heat warning criteria, she recommended residents take precautions before spending time outside.

“Get shade and air conditioning if you can and take breaks from the heat.”
