‘Welcome Home’ barbecue gathering planned for Krista Fox after cross-country walk

Local advocate for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Krista Fox is being welcomed home at a special gathering in North Battleford.

Organized by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC), the barbecue event will be held at the Atoskewin Success Centre parking lot at 971 104 St. at 12 p.m. on Oct. 14.

Fox recently completed a cross-country journey to increase awareness about the issue of MMIW that has impacted communities throughout Canada.

She also walked to raise awareness of missing North Battleford woman Ashley Morin, who disappeared in July of 2018. RCMP believe Morin, a 31-year-old woman from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, was the victim of a homicide.

Fox was joined on her walk by Ashley’s mother, Diane Morin, who will also be there for the welcome-home gathering, as they both have returned home to the Battlefords.

BATC’s chief operations officer Terrance Thomas said the event is an opportunity to honour Fox for all her work and dedication to such an important cause.

“I think she deserves recognition for her efforts to promote awareness for a very serious issue that’s plaguing women across Canada, particularly Indigenous women,” he said. “It’s remarkable the amount of support that she has received but it’s truly a personal effort that needs to be recognized, the effort is monumental.”

Krista Fox’s Kilometres For MMIW walk started in February in Victoria, B.C., and wrapped up last month when she returned home after traveling across Canada, from the West Coast to the East Coast, meeting many families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and supporters in communities along the way.
