Loss of $170K leads to firing of SHA employee

A Saskatchewan Health Authority employee was fired in connection with a loss of public money totalling nearly $170,000.

The loss was included in a report on losses of public money within Saskatchewan’s health organizations that was tabled with the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.

According to a media release Monday, the loss was reported to the Ministry of Health in the second quarter of the 2022-23 fiscal year, which ran from July 1 to Sept. 30.

The release said that between 2015 and 2020, a Saskatoon-based employee “amended time records subsequent to manager approval, resulting in overpayment for time not worked.” The loss was $169,968.

The release said the employee was fired Feb. 8, 2021. The incident also was reported to the Saskatoon Police Service, which decided against laying charges and closed the file.

“The SHA considers this incident concluded at this time,” the release said.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the regional colleges, government ministries and Crown corporations also filed their reports. None showed any losses during the period.
