Meadow Lake Tribal Council, province clarify emergency management with letter of understanding

Nov 16, 2022 | 10:37 AM

When it comes to managing emergencies, Meadow Lake Tribal Council and Saskatchewan’s Public Safety Agency clarified the details earlier this week by signing a letter of understanding.

“It gives us an opportunity to build capacity and eventually takes control of managing emergencies as they arise,” Cree Vice Chief Richard Derocher said. “I am extremely thrilled that the Meadow Lake Tribal Council is acting in the best interests of our member nations by entering into a Letter of Understanding with the SPSA.”

The agreement remains in effect until 2027 and will provide both parties with opportunities to coordinate before, during, and after an emergency. Both parties agreed to have an activation plan and timely communication between all emergency partners is critical to public safety and emergency management.

“We are excited for this new step forward,” SPSA President and Fire Commissioner Marlo Pritchard said. “This agreement is an opportunity to increase collaboration and build on a relationship that benefits all communities serviced by MLTC.”
