The Water Security Agency is reminding people to stay off the ice until it is thick enough to go on to walk, snowmobile, or drive.
In a media release, the minister responsible for the Water Security Agency Jeremy Cockrill says it is important to evaluate the ice regularly. “We recommend checking ice thickness each and every time you venture on our provincial waters to ensure you are safe this winter.”
As a guideline, the province suggests minimum ice thicknesses for various activities.
- At least 10 cm (four inches) of ice to walk on
- At least 20 cm (eight inches) to drive a snowmobile or ATV
- At least 30 cm (12 inches) to drive a car or light truck on
- More than 30 cm (12 inches) to support a heavy truck
