RCMP issue 14 traffic tickets in Meadow Lake area checkstops

Saskatchewan RCMP reported Tuesday, they issued a number of tickets for violations while conducting checkstops in the Meadow Lake area.

As part of a recent traffic-safety initiative and awareness campaign, the RCMP along with members from the local Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) ran vehicle checkstops in and around Meadow Lake.

The RCMP also reported their partners at Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) gave the detachment 50 gift cards to give to people as an early Christmas gift for demonstrating safe-driving practices.

A total of 131 vehicles were stopped and checked during the two-day initiative.

As a result, 23 roadside breath tests were conducted. From that amount, 20 drivers passed without issue, two received suspensions, and one was charged with impaired driving.

Police issued a total of 14 tickets for infractions under the Traffic Safety Act.
They also gave three warnings.

In one incident, officers at one of the checkstops noted a vehicle turned off the road just before coming through. To ensure the driver wasn’t avoiding the checkstop due to unlawful behaviour, officers followed the vehicle and pulled it over. The driver advised he thought police were conducting an operation that was not related to traffic safety, and wanted to avoid getting in the way. After passing a roadside breath test, the driver was given one of the gift cards and thanked for his consideration and compliance. The driver later returned to the checkstop with coffee and donuts for the officers, and apologized again for the misunderstanding.

The RCMP said in their release they want to “thank the public for their cooperation during these types of initiatives, and for helping us make the holidays safe for all.”
