Some residents of La Loche evacuated again due to wildfires

Some wildfire evacuees in the province had little time to unpack their bags.

The Northern Village of La Loche declared a state of emergency Tuesday afternoon and has begun evacuating priority 1 and 2 residents to Regina.

Pregnant women, young children, seniors and people with health issues are under a mandatory evacuation, while everyone else is on standby should conditions get worse.

According to the Northern Village’s Facebook page, a wildfire burning 9 kilometres north is slowly moving toward the community. Highway 955 is currently closed and all community resources have been deployed to help fight the fire.

The Northern Village said air scrubbers are being installed at the community hall to provide a place for people to escape the smoke.

It’s the second time this month La Loche residents have had to be evacuated.

Meanwhile, evacuees from other northern communities, who just started returning home this week, were told Tuesday to keep their bags packed with fires flaring up again.

As of Wednesday morning, 21 fires were burning across the province, eight of which were listed as not contained.
