Mostly quiet evening for Meadow Lake council at Monday meeting

It wasn’t a busy agenda but Meadow Lake City Council still had some big items to discuss during a regular council meeting on Monday.

Mayor Merlin Seymour said the biggest item they reviewed was the progress on the city’s new recreation facility.

“They’re mobilizing, they’ve got some equipment, they’re starting to do some work, getting rid of the old arena floor so they can get going with the groundwork and stuff for the new facility,” he said.

The $51 million project will include a full NHL-sized ice surface, a skating rink, a field house, and an event hall.

The City of Meadow Lake is hoping to have an official groundbreaking ceremony in September with the plan to have the ice surface ready sometime in 2024.

Last fall, the city received confirmation of federal and provincial dollars that will go toward the new facility. The federal government is committing close to $15 million while the province is chipping in just over $12 million.

Seymour also touched on a couple of other items council looked over on Monday night including a request for parking amendments and a change of ownership for a part of the Treaty Land Entitlement (TLE) with Flying Dust First Nation.

City Council also received an official invitation to the Hockey Saskatchewan Hall of Fame induction dinner which will take place in Meadow Lake on Aug. 25.

Council won’t meet again until Aug. 28 before returning to bi-monthly meetings starting in September.
