Hoping to give young people something to do, and somewhere to go, Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation will open its new youth centre tomorrow.

With three large pool tables, a ping-pong table, foosball, television, couches, computers and more, Chief Richard Ben said everything there is for the kids.

“It was a long-time coming, we looked at what we had currently and got feedback from the kids and they indicated they wanted to check their Facebook and use google, a lot of times kids will go there for school research,” Ben said. “Also having a T.V. there with couches where kids could watch hockey or ball or whatever, they have that resource there.”

Located beside the youth centre is also a fitness centre.

“We have countless gym nights for our kids to keep them occupied and to keep them away from drugs and alcohol, which is our main focus here,” he said.

The majority of the centre’s funding comes from the federal government with the remainder from Prince Albert’s Community Development Corporation, specifically casino dollars.

The youth centre is staffed by three people, two of them under the age of 24. Ben added, the workers are paid through a program with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council.

The grand opening for the youth centre is scheduled for tomorrow, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m.
