Oil spill forum to conclude with protest in N.B.

Aug 3, 2016 | 5:00 PM

A grassroots protest march will cap off a forum on the recent oil spill tomorrow in North Battleford.

The forum begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 4 in North Battleford. Organized by Rod Gopher and Chief Wayne Semaganis, it will open with prayers from elders and comments from local chiefs.

The protest starts at 2 p.m. outside the Whiterock Gas Plus on Highway 4, where the forum is taking place. Protesters will march down 100th Street, turning onto the highway across the Battlefords Bridge.

A program for the event lists segments which will include Husky Oil and Premier Brad Wall, though Wall said he was not invited to the event at a press conference in North Battleford earlier today.

The event agenda also lists the Assembly of First Nations and Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, reserving time for local chiefs and members of local First Nations.

The forum is titled Is Moving Oil By Pipeline Safe? and according to the program, will address the recent spill from a Husky Energy pipeline that leaked oil into the North Saskatchewan River, its cleanup and long term effects.
