Carrot River hosting wrestling regionals this weekend

For the first time in the community’s history, Carrot River will be hosting the high school regional wrestling championships.

On Saturday, close to 200 wrestlers from across the province will travel to Carrot River in hopes of making provincials.

Every school with a wrestling team, except those from Regina or Saskatoon, will be at regionals, with 31 different weight categories between the boys and the girls, ranging from grade nine to grade 12 students.

The top four in each category will move on to Provincials on Mar. 7 and 8 at the University of Regina.

There are 3A schools such as Carrot River in this weekend’s Regionals, 4A schools like the ones in Nipawin and Melfort, and 5A schools from P.A., Swift Current and Weyburn.

Eighteen of the 31 weight classes are boys, with the other 13 being girls. Eleven wrestlers will come from Carrot River, six of them boys and the other five girls.

“This is our first time doing this, we’ve only had our wrestling program since 2017, so we’re quite excited about having that opportunity to host. We’ve been rather competitive the last few years in the 3A category as a team, and our girl’s team is actually the defending regional champions,” said Carrot River wrestling head coach Kevin Duchsherer.

“We as a team are excited to be able to wrestle in front of our own hometown here, and we’re hoping that it will bring a lot more interest to the sport.”

The doors will open to the public at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with wrestling to commence at 10 a.m.

There will be three mats going on at once, as 300-325 matches are expected over the course of the day.

A lunch break will occur around the middle of the day, with all matches anticipated to be completed, if everything runs smoothly, around 5 p.m.

If there are five or fewer wrestlers in a weight class, they will wrestle round-robin style, however, if there are six or more in a class then it will be done in a bracket format.

There are two main ways a wrestler can win a match outright. One is pinning their opponent, both shoulders to the mat, for at least a second, or winning by technical dominance, which means gaining a 10-point lead on your opponent at some point during the match.

If neither occurs, students will wrestle two, three-minute halves and at the end of those six minutes, they go to the scoring and whoever has the better score wins on decision.

The admission fee to watch the wrestling tomorrow is $10 for adults, $7 for students and free for anyone in grade six or younger.
