It is with heavy hearts that the family of Madeline Elizabeth Heathen announce her passing on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the age of 74 years in the Lloydminster Hospital.
A Tribute to Madeline Heathen
Madeline, the pillar of her family and eldest daughter of Violet Heathen and Simon Cook, was born on May 18, 1951 in a log house at Onion Lake First Nations from her earliest days, she was a protector and a provider, possessing a maturity that seemed to precede her years. She stepped into a vital role, helping her mother raise and provide for her siblings.
She was more than an older sister; she was a mothering force, ensuring her siblings were fed, cared for, and loved daily. Following the untimely passing of her father, Simon, Madeline stepped unhesitatingly into the void left behind. At an age when many are still finding their own way, she became the steady hand that helped her mother, Violet, hold their world together.
A Shield for Her Siblings
As the eldest, Madeline didn’t just witness the family’s struggles; she shouldered them. She became:
- The Second Matriarch: Helping Violet manage the household and ensure her younger siblings felt safe and loved despite their loss.
- The Quiet Provider: Putting the needs of the family above her own dreams, often working behind the scenes to ensure there was food on the table and a roof overhead.
- The Moral Compass: Setting an example of work ethic and resilience that would define the Heathen-Cook family for generations.
A Life of Selfless Purpose
Madeline’s “Legacy of Care and Strength” wasn’t born out of ease, but out of necessity and a deep, abiding love. She learned early on that strength isn’t about how much one can carry, but about how gracefully one carries it for the sake of others.
Her life became a testament to the idea that even in the face of grief, one can choose to be a source of light. She didn’t just survive the loss of her father; she honored his memory by becoming the protector he would have wanted her to be
As she grew and started her family, she became a devoted mother to Laura and Clayton. Her home was a sanctuary – she was a meticulous house keeper and a gifted cook. The welcoming aroma of her kitchen was a signature of her hospitality; to enter Madeline’s home was to be fed and to feel instantly at peace. A devoted Kohkum Madeline greatest joy was found in her grandchildren. As a kohkum, she poured her heart and soul into raising Harmony, guiding her with the same gentleness that she had shown her siblings and children. She remained a constant presence in Harmony’s life until the very end.
Madeline leaves behind her Children Laura Cook (Floyd Littlewolfe), Clayton Cook (Cynthia Littlewolfe) and Sonia Stanly; Granddaughters Harmony Cook whom she raised, Brooklyn Lewis and Shanika; Siblings Doris, Wendy (Kenny), Wilson (Paula), Alice (Shane), Leona (Darwin), Burton (Angela) and Glen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her Children’s Father Frank Moochweines; Special Partner Oliver Parenteau; Parents Simon (1972) and Violet Cook (1993); Brothers Allan (1953), Lawrence (1980), Roddy (1992), and Johnny (2022); Sister Helen (2023); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
