Flying Dust First Nation is set to expand its land base after the province approved a new transfer tied to longstanding Treaty commitments.

The Government of Saskatchewan said Tuesday it will transfer about 17.1 hectares of Crown mineral rights to the federal government on Flying Dust’s behalf under the Treaty Land Entitlement framework.

With the latest approval, the total amount of Crown mineral rights designated for Flying Dust now stands at roughly 5,640 hectares.

The transfer is part of efforts to fulfill treaty obligations addressing historic gaps in promised reserve land.

“Treaty Land Entitlement is an important part of our shared responsibility to honour Treaty commitments in reserve land allocations,” Minister Responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Eric Schmalz said.

“Each transfer helps create long-term opportunities for economic growth that benefit First Nations and communities across Saskatchewan.”

Flying Dust is one of three First Nations included in the latest approvals, along with Pasqua First Nation and Mistawasis Nêhiyawak.

The province said it will continue working with First Nations and the federal government to advance reserve creation through land and mineral transfers aimed at supporting economic development and reconciliation.
