Meadow Lake City Manager Amanda Flasch is being recognized for a badminton career that took her from provincial championships in Ontario to leadership roles at the University of Waterloo.

Flasch was recently named to the University of Waterloo Athletics Hall of Fame, an honour she said has given her the opportunity to reflect on years of competition and coaching.

“It feels good to have my athletic achievements recognized and it’s been great to reflect on everything I was able to accomplish and participate in as a varsity athlete,” she wrote in a statement.

Originally from Mississauga, Ont., Flasch began playing badminton at about age 10 with the Erindale Junior Badminton Club. She quickly developed into a top player alongside her twin sister.

“We were a strong doubles team, and during high school we earned gold at three high school provincials.”

The pair captured bronze at the 2003 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations badminton championship before winning three consecutive provincial high school titles.

Flasch also competed in three Ontario Winter Games – twice as an athlete representing the Toronto and District team and once as a manager for the Western Ontario Badminton Association district.

“During the latter part of high school and university, I competed in both the Badminton Ontario circuit and several Badminton Canada events. I have also coached programs and private lessons at the KW Badminton Club, Cambridge Junior Badminton Club, and a few other locations,” she said.

Flasch enrolled at the University of Waterloo in 2006 and earned a spot on the varsity badminton team in her first season. The team won a silver medal that year at the provincial championships.

The following year, she was named women’s team captain, a role she held until becoming head coach from 2011 to 2013. During her university career, she received the Shield of Excellence award and was named an Ontario University Athletics all-star from the 2007-08 season through 2011-12.

“I was so very fortunate to have been part of such an amazing athletic community that served to support one another both athletically and academically,” she said.

Although she no longer competes, Flasch said the lessons she learned through sport continue to shape her today.

“Being an athlete, captain, coach and manager is such a humbling and educational experience,” she said. “You learn so much about teamwork, navigating conflict, pushing through challenges and coordination, that you develop life-long skills without even realizing that you’re developing them.”

Since moving to Saskatchewan, Flasch has remained involved in the sport, serving as a coach and manager for the Rivers West District at three Saskatchewan Winter Games.

She will return to Waterloo in September for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, an honour she called “truly a blessing.”
