‘Compete with pride’: Tony Cote Summer Games begin in North Battleford

“Many of our youth are attending these Games for the first time,” said Moosomin First Nation Chief Quentin Swiftwolfe. “They are experiencing the excitement of competition and the strength of coming together as First Nations people.”

Swiftwolfe urged participants to compete with pride, support one another and represent their communities with respect. 

“Have fun, make new friends, create long-lasting memories, treat one another with kindness and respect,” he said.

Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson thanked the volunteers, organizers and youth who completed the sacred lance run ahead of the Games. 

“They left La Ronge the morning of July 15 and they just arrived here yesterday in North Battleford. They had over a 600-kilometre journey with the lance run,” she said. 

Cook-Searson said the journey strengthened ties between Lac La Ronge Indian Band and Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs communities, adding she hopes those relationships continue to grow throughout the Games.

With the sacred lance delivered and the athletes welcomed, the focus now shifts to a week of competition, friendship and celebration as the 2026 Tony Cote Summer Games get underway in the Battlefords.
