“I’m excited. Obviously, I’ve really liked my time here so far and I’m proud of what we’ve done so far,” Johnson said. “But obviously, I feel like there’s still a lot more to be done. So I’m just excited for the future.”

The five-foot-seven defender has since played 68 games across all competitions for Vancouver, tallying one goal and five assists.

He helped the team to a fourth-straight Canadian Championship, an MLS Western Conference title and its first MLS Cup final appearance last season.

Hailing from Tampa, Fla., Johnson is also part of the United States’ youth national program, and has made two appearances for the U-20 team and two more for the U-21 side.

“He’s a very good learner, and I think that helps him,” Sorensen said. “And then he is very competitive. It’s been quite impressive what he’s done in such a short while.”

The extension is the latest in a long string of contracts Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster has signed in recent weeks.

Vancouver also inked Canadian midfielder-turned-defender Ralph Priso to an extension, and brought in Colombian defender Sebastian Ramirez, Serbian midfielder Aleksa Cvetkovic and Canadian forward Kwasi Poku.

The club signed Canadian prospects Emrick Fotsing and Valter Sedin, and has been linked to Rui Modesto, a 26-year-old winger playing in Italy’s second division and Yadaly Diaby, a 26-year-old striker playing in France’s second division.

Integrating new players to the group midway through the season isn’t easy, Sorensen said.

“I think in the winter it’s easier because you start the season with everybody on the roster, and you know what the roster looks like,” he said. “Now it’s a little bit in and out, and some comes in and some goes out, and it’s a little bit more tricky.”

The new talents help bolster a roster that lost star midfielder Sebastian Berhalter in a transfer to English Championship side Middlesborough last month. Vancouver has also lost defenders Sebastian Schonlau (contract buyout) and Joedrick Pupe (transfer), and midfielder Aziel Jackson (end of loan) this season, and weathered a slew of long-term injuries, including to centrebacks Ranko Veselinovic (knee), Belal Halbouni (knee) and midfielder Kenji Cabrera (foot).

They also add a new energy to team, Sorensen said.

“It’s very important for a team that you have new energy, that you have the competitive level high, and that people compete for positions,” he said. “And new faces show up that also maybe, you know, change or disrupts the hierarchy a little bit. So it’s great.”

The Whitecaps (12-4-4) currently sit atop the MLS Western Conference standings and will look to defend that position Saturday when they visit Sporting Kansas City (4-14-3).

It’s been a difficult season for Sporting, who sit at the bottom of the conference, but Sorensen said his team won’t be taking the game lightly.

“Every opponent we have, if they are allowed to play up to their strength, it will be difficult for us,” he said.

“What is important is that we play our game the way we want to. And Kansas, when you look at it, it’s the top against the bottom, but all the games can be tricky.”
