Lloydminster removes 21 downtown benches in bid to curb social disruption
Lloydminster city council approved the temporary removal of 21 city-owned downtown benches in an effort to disrupt recurring gathering spots after businesses raised concerns about safety and social disruption in the core.
The measure changes a public space used by residents and visitors, but city officials acknowledge it does not address the homelessness, addictions and mental-health crises underlying some of the disruption and could move the activity elsewhere.
The removal affected municipally owned benches within a designated downtown area but excluded four around the gazebo. Administration also believes there are approximately nine privately owned advertising benches with unapproved leases in the area.
Each city bench was expected to require less than an hour of labour and cost less than $200 to remove. Administration said they could be stored at the operations yard and returned if the measure does not improve conditions.
