Hertzog said the 50 per cent tariff could add $20,000 onto a $40,000 bike price tag.

“It’s going to make it very difficult to try to sell our product if this goes through and continues on,” he said.

Hertzog understands why Canada is retaliating against the United States tariffs, but said counter measures harm local businesses.

“You have got to hold your ground, but we got to be really cautious on how we hold our ground,” he said. “I don’t see that tariffs hurt the other country as much as it hurts their own country.”

Dealership challenged by tariffs before

Twenty-five per cent tariffs were implemented by Canada on Harley-Davidson motorcycles for the first time in March 2025.

Hertzog said the store managed to avoid the tariffs because Harley-Davidson was able to get its products from a factory in Thailand, instead of the United States.

“That’s not an easy process to change over, and it takes months to get it done,” he said. “By the time we got it done, the tariffs were changed all of a sudden.”

Hertzog said it currently orders its supply from the United States after shipping changed again.

Trying to create a proper budget is incredibly difficult, Hertzog said, because trade negotiations have been a “moving target.”

The co-owner is concerned about losing sales if the tariffs stay on for a long period of time.

“If you’re not selling product, it’s really hard to pay bills,” he said. “It’ll be a tough go over the next little while, and it’s very difficult.

“Life, as everybody knows, has changed so much that even to try to do a budget, it changes daily.”
