Ma Faamii opens in Beauval

Another northern Métis community has opened a centre to support the community through economic, social, and mental support services.

Thursday, the community of Beauval alongside the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan opened their location Ma Faamii, the fifth of its kind in the province.

Loretta King is the Minister of Child and Family Services for the Métis Nation, and said that this will provide a vital bridge between the people of Beauval and the services that they don’t have available in their community.

“We have a wide range of programs and services with the Métis Nation, and so this is where people will be able to go into the building, they will be able to meet our community service worker, and they will be able to apply for each program that way, whether it’s through our medical transportation assistance program, through housing supports, through our early learning, or even citizenship and registry, those people will be able to connect the citizens to the programming.”

Services offered at Ma Faamii include education and housing opportunities, while strengthening partnerships with municipalities and other levels of government. For elders living in remote communities, the Ma Faamii centres offer a place for them to connect with services they would only be able to access online.

Beauval is the smallest community a Ma Faamii location has opened up in so far. According to King though, the community itself serves a large portion of the Métis Nation.

“I’m thinking about the general location of the Beauval Ma Faamii, and there will be other people from, let’s say Patuanak or other locations, that will pass through Beauval. So Beauval is like the centralized area where people will be able to access.”

Other centres such as the one in Prince Albert also offer daycare services, but the one in Beauval will not.

The building also serves as a community gathering space for Métis Nation events.

“Ma Faamii is more than a name and it’s more than just a building. It is for our families. So that we can strengthen our families and then strengthen our nation.”

The Beauval location is the fifth Ma Faamii office to open since 2023. The others are located in Prince Albert, Yorkton, North Battleford, and Saskatoon.
