The game was scoreless into the second period when Kotkaniemi opened the scoring at 6:09, jamming in a rebound from the top of the crease.

The goal came on Carolina’s 19th shot of the game as Cooley had made a series of spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless.

It was a tremendous bounceback effort for Cooley, who in his last start 10 days ago, was beaten seven times on 30 shots by the Colorado Avalanche. Dustin Wolf had started the last three games for the Flames.

On the game-winner at 15:32 of the third, Frost sent a perfect saucer pass across the slot to Sharangovich, who one-timed it as soon as the puck landed on his stick and picked the top corner, sending Bussi’s water bottle flying.

TAKEAWAYS

Hurricanes: Mark Jankowski (lower body) was unable to play. The former Flame is on a career-best six-game goal-scoring streak, which is one short of tying Ray Ferraro (1988-89) for the second-longest run in franchise history. Pierre Larouche (1981-82) holds the franchise mark at nine.

Flames: Frost’s team-leading third goal, scored on the power play, comes in career game No. 400. … Matt Coronato, who had an assist on Gridin’s goal, was playing in his 200th career game … Calgary made one lineup change up front with Brennan Othmann coming in for Maxim Tsyplakov.

KEY MOMENT

Down 1-0 late in the second, Calgary went from one goal down to one goal up when Gridin, with his first of the season, and Frost scored 69 seconds apart. But just 17 seconds after that and with four seconds left in the period, Chatfield tied it on a long shot from the blue line that went through a maze of bodies and past a screened Cooley.

KEY STAT

Calgary had been 0-5 when giving up the game’s first goal. The Hurricanes had been 5-0 when scoring the first goal.
