It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of James (Jim) Henry Sonntag, age 80, of Goodsoil, SK. Jim passed away on October 15, 2026 at the L. Gervais Memorial Center in Goodsoil. Jim was born on November 19, 1945 in Loon Lake, SK to Fred and Rosalie Sonntag. James was the 3rd of 7 children. Dianne (Barry), Don (Deanna), Jane (Wayne), Freddie, Carol (Roger), and Mike. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Fred and Rosalie, his sister Jane, sister-in-law Deanna, and his mother-in-law Marjorie Digout.
Jim married the love of his life Jacqueline (nee Digout), on August 24, 1996. They shared 30 wonderful years of marriage, with love, laughter and sacrifice. His pride and joy were his kids, Melinda, Lori (Dean), Steven, Jesse (Gail), and Jennifer (Matt). Love of family, friends, and farming were most important to him. His grandchildren brought him the greatest joy, from following the accomplishments and adventures of the older ones, to the cuddles and giggles from the little ones. Grandchildren include Amanda, Jennifer (Oscar), Jason, Brant, Alana, Angel Grandbaby Rustin, Briar, Riley, and Estelle. Jim’s passion was farming. No matter how busy he was, he always had time to stop for a coffee and a visit with friends and neighbours. Jim was known for showing up just in time for meals at someone’s house, but returned the favour with his famous spaghetti. Supper in the field, playing the guitar, a good game of kaiser, reading the Western Producer, dancing with his wife, going for a drive to check crops or cows, and family gatherings filled his time when he wasn’t working long days on the farm. He enjoyed attending all his children’s activities and would have the biggest grin when watching them in action. Jim had a gift for being able to visit with anyone, making friends wherever he went.
Jim suffered a Spinal Cord Injury in a farm accident on June 05, 2012. He was left quadriplegic. He faced this life changing injury with quiet faith, courage, determination, and inner strength. Jackie remained by his side as his main caregiver, up until the last 6 months of his life when he moved into long term care.
We would like to send a huge thank you for all of the special care he received from his Doctors, Nurses, Caregivers, Therapists, and all staff at the L. Gervais Memorial Center. You are all very special people.
The funeral mass to celebrate Jim’s life will be at the St. Boniface Church in Goodsoil, on Saturday, October 24, at 1:00 with Father Dong Doan officiating, and the burial to follow. The reception after will be at the Goodsoil Hall. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the L. Gervais Memorial Health Center, Box 100 Goodsoli, Saskatchewan S0M 1A0.
