Sask. justice ministry reminds gun owners of federal amnesty extension
The Government of Saskatchewan is reminding gun owners that the federal amnesty period for a number of outlawed guns has been extended past the end of this month.
Since 2020, the federal government has banned roughly 2,500 models of firearms. While the owners of the prohibited guns had to dispose of or deactivate them by Oct. 30, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice says the amnesty period has been extended to 90 days after the Supreme Court of Canada renders its decision on appeals that challenged Ottawa’s gun bans.
According to the ministry, that decision isn’t expected until the middle of next year.
“Affected individuals and businesses will remain protected from criminal liability during the extended amnesty period, provided they continue to comply with the amnesty conditions,” the ministry said in a statement.
