Meadow Lake lagoon dredging complete, but south-side odour lingers

Nov 3, 2026 | 5:24 PM

Dredging and excavation at Meadow Lake’s sewage lagoon are complete, but the city says a remaining pile of grit is contributing to odours on the south side.

The lagoon is now open and accepting septic loads from vacuum trucks, the City of Meadow Lake said in a Nov. 3 notice.

The amount of grit and other debris in cells A1 and 1 required excavation in addition to dredging to remove the material. Some excavated grit was left on site to dry before it could be hauled away.

The remaining pile is to be removed next. The city said, “As it dries and is hauled away, we expect odours in the area to gradually improve.”

The work follows ongoing issues with sludge buildup.

In June, the city said sludge occupied as much as 56 per cent of some treatment cells, reducing wastewater capacity. Removing the buildup was intended to restore that capacity and address odour problems.

When work began in July, residents were warned that disturbing the accumulated sludge and debris could temporarily worsen the smell. The initial stage involved work on the aeration system ahead of its planned removal for maintenance.

The city said further timelines and information will be shared through Voyent Alert!, Facebook and its capital projects webpage.
