The plant is on Highway 16 east of Lloydminster, in Saskatchewan’s Rural Municipality of Wilton No. 472. It has annual capacity to produce 130 million litres of ethanol and about 130,000 tonnes of dried distillers grain.

Its grain purchasing specifications list wheat, corn, triticale and rye, according to the industry website Ethanol Map.

A similar Cenovus plant in Minnedosa, Man., will remain open.

According to Ethanol Map’s project timeline, Husky Energy announced plans for the plant in February 2004 and officially opened it Sept. 26, 2006. Cenovus acquired the facility through its purchase of Husky, which was finalized in 2021.

The timeline also lists federal support for the operation, including $7.8 million reported in 2004 and up to $71.8 million in assistance tied to eligible ethanol production announced in 2009.

Husky commissioned a carbon dioxide capture facility at Lloydminster in 2012. The project captured carbon dioxide from the ethanol plant for transport by truck and injection into nearby heavy oil reservoirs, according to Ethanol Map.

A further $14.5 million in federal support announced in May 2012 for the carbon capture and enhanced oil recovery project.
