Clara Greschner was born in Tuzina, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) on May 2, 1926, in the same house where her father was born. She passed away in Meadow Lake, SK on October 26, 2024 after being hospitalized in September.
Clara leaves to mourn her passing her daughters Shirley Krueckl, Patricia, Joyce (Kirk Sherbino), Joanne (Steve Cossins), and Melanie (who lived with her and was her best friend); her grandchildren Nicole(Mike Chase), Kari (Kirk Lamont), Rob Krueckl, Kim Krueckl (Mark Flaman), Erin (Matt Poitras), Jordan Sherbino (Mitchell Anderson); her eight great
grandchildren: Ben and Jonah Chase; Klaire and Loch Lamont; Kaylee, Mason and Becca Poitras; and Jack Krueckl Flaman. She also leaves
sister-in-law Nadyne Greschner, along with many nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.
Clara was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Klara Greschner, her husband Francis Hankey, her son Norman, her son-in-law Edward Krueckl, infant granddaughter Anna, her five siblings and her husband’s seventeen siblings.
Clara came to Canada with her mother and her brother John when she was two years old. The family lived in Dodsland, SK then moved to the Goodsoil area in 1930. She completed Elementary School at the original Goodsoil School, then boarded in Meadow Lake to attend High School. After graduating, she went to Saskatoon to get her teaching certificate at Normal School. Clara taught at Tamarack School near Loon Lake, then Golden Ridge and Northern Beauty, all one-room schools with up to 45 pupils. She met Francis Hankey at a church picnic in Golden Ridge. They soon fell in love and got married on July 6, 1948. While raising six children, Clara started working for Canada Post in 1960, at first part-time but eventually becoming the full-time Postmaster. She retired at age 70.
Clara was an active member in the Goodsoil community. She served as secretary of the Home and School Association, treasurer of the Rinks Committee, and served on the Board of the Goodsoil Library for many years. A member of Saint Boniface Parish from its inception, she became a Reader, a Eucharistic Minister, a Lay Minister and a member of the Parish Council. She was a charter member of its CWL and taught catechism at Goodsoil School.
Clara took great delight in writing her weekly newspaper column, which she started in 1966 and continued for nearly 59 years. Poor eyesight in later years meant she couldn’t type, but the ideas were always her own. In 2016 she received the Gold Quill, the highest award given by the Canadian Newspaper Association, and in 2022 she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medal for community involvement.
Clara was devoted to her family and her community. She loved meeting people from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Her natural curiosity combined with self-confidence allowed her to communicate easily and in this way she touched many lives. Her unwavering faith in God gave her strength, grace and peace in her final days.
