James Edwin Thomas (Jim) was born May 26, 1939 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Florence & Johnny Thomas. Jim was the oldest child, big brother to sister Ronaele. He grew up and resided in Winnipeg MB, Regina, Nipawin and Moosomin, Sask. Jim grew up with an interest in the funeral profession, as his father, Johnny, was a funeral director also. He began apprenticing under his Uncle Roy Carscadden, in 1958 at Moosomin, Sk and Virden, MB. Jim became licensed as an embalmer & funeral director within the Province of Manitoba, however upon the passing of his Uncle Roy he moved to Saskatoon to complete his Saskatchewan apprenticeship. He did this with the Saskatoon Funeral Home becoming qualified in 1961 and continued working there until 1969. In 1961 Jim married Nola Fletcher and they resided in Saskatoon where his two sons were born, Robert in 1965 and Darcy in 1967. In 1969 Jim and Nola moved back to Moosomin, Sask. where he worked with his father, Johnny, in the Thomas Funeral Home and Ambulance Service. He also owned and operated Sunset Memorial Garden Cemetery, a car wash as well as taught driver training in the Moosomin High School. At Moosomin their daughter, Susan, was born in 1970. In the summer of 1975 Jim, Nola and family moved to Meadow Lake after purchasing the Funeral Home and Ambulance Service in the community from the Jackson family. He has resided here since that time – 50 years. His beloved wife, Nola, passed away in 2014 and he found four legged companions Vinny (passed) and currently Alon.
Jim was a faithful and long time member of the Masonic Lodge of Freemasons, just receiving his 60-year pin in January of this year. He was one of many pioneers in advancing emergency care and operation of ambulance services within the province. Jim provided professional, respectful funeral service to many communities, doing so with the utmost compassion and dignity. He took advancing the standards of the funeral service seriously and was the Provincial President of the Saskatchewan Funeral Service Association during its 75th Anniversary in 1989. Jim was an avid pistol target shooter, enjoyed crafting and making knives as well as a collector of all things. He was also a big Science Fiction fan, especially Star Trek, and really enjoyed listening to any music sung by Elvis Presley.
