Patricia Low

Patricia Margaret Low was born on May 2, 1929 in Norwich, England, the middle of 3 girls. She trained and worked as a nurse in London, then began her midwifery training. She heard about a nursing shortage in Canada from her friend Mary Caves who had come to Canada a year earlier. She decided to try this out and sailed to Canada in June 1957 with her friend Mary Pryer.
After sailing to Montreal, they took the train to Regina and the bus to Loon Lake where they were met and driven to Goodsoil, an extremely long trip!
Pat nursed at the Goodsoil Hospital until her retirement in the 1990’s. It was a big adjustment from living in London but she learned to survive with no running water, no flush toilets, learning Canadian terminology (both medical and for everyday usage), and lots of mosquitoes and black flies. She grew to enjoy winter as it was a strong contrast to the rainy dreary days in England.
Pat enjoyed the friendliness of the people in Goodsoil and decided to make this her permanent home. She was adventurous and willing to try new things which made her a favourite new member of the village, becoming “Aunty Pat” to most of the community, especially the children of the hospital staff.
Pat died on May 13, 2024 and is survived by her sister Myra, her brother-in-law Brian, her nieces Susan, Anne, Camilla and Rachel, and their families (all in England), and an amazing number of friends.
Those who so wish, may make a memorial donation to their own favourite charity. Pat’s generosity extended to many; it would have been hard to choose just one!
