Shelagh Isobel Gregory (Wilson)
October 27, 1930 – November 23, 2021
On the evening of November 23 our beloved Shelagh passed peacefully with family at her side. Shelagh is survived by her daughter Susan Legere (husband Don Legere), her son Russell Gregory (wife Jayme Gregory), grandson Jason Legere (wife Natalie Legere) and grandchildren Dylan Wilson Gregory and Keegan Jaxson Gregory, great grandchildren Abby Legere and Dawson Legere.
Shelagh was born in Leeds, UK and was the apple of the eye of her father Lieutenant Reginald Wilson and mother Fanny Wilson. She grew ups through the tribulations of WWII and subsequently attended St. Anthony’s School. At St. Anthony’s she was on the first 11 field hockey team and in her last year in 1949 was the Head Senior Prefect Girl. After graduating from St. Anthony’s, Shelagh was off to London to commence nursing at Guy’s Hospital where she met her husband who was in medical school. Shelagh and Peter moved to Canada, for a time in Canora, Saskatchewan and then settling in Calgary, Alberta.
Shelagh obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary and had a lengthy career as a teacher of elementary grades. In 1990 Shelagh, who was at the time acting Assistant Principal at Chinook Park Elementary, was honoured with an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Letters of commendation on the Award were received from the Superintendent of the Calgary School Division, Alberta Teachers Association, MInister of Education, Minister of Education and the MLA of the day.
Her years of service included longstanding dedication to the St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Calgary, Alberta. She spent many hours at St. Barnabas organizing historical records and the library. Most recently Her Royal Majesty Elizabeth II sent a thank you card to Shelagh for the condolences expressed on the passing of Prince Phillip.
A service will be scheduled in the spring/summer of 2022 and Cremains will be interred in the Memorial Gardens of St. Barnabas, Calgary. The family wishes to extend a deep expression of thanks to the staff at both the Meadow Lake Pioneer Lodge and the Gervais Memorial Health Center in Goodsoil, Saskatchewan for their care and attention to Shelagh as more than just a resident but a valued friend over the past number of years.
