Wally Hildedgarde Cubbon (Nee Schafer)
Born on February 16, 1933 in Jakobow Poland, Wally grew up on a nearby farm with her family. In 1949 Wally, her mother Else, and brother Alvin immigrated to Canada to be with family in the Makwa Saskatchewan area. Wally’s sister Herta had immigrated to Ottawa earlier. Wally met Mark, and in 1953 they were married. They had 3 children (Linda, Dave, Grant). After living in North Battleford, Winnipeg, and 3 years in Germany, the family settled in Saskatoon in 1969. Wally got a job in housekeeping at University Hospital, working her way through several jobs until finally taking the head cook position at the Kinsmen Children’s Rehabilitation Centre where she retired in 1997. Mom was always there for family. She became famous at her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchildren’s sports for untiring support, positive attitude, and of course an endless supply of ‘spudnuts’ for a post-game snack or road trip. There was always a reason for family gatherings on holidays, birthdays, or other special occasions. Her smile lit up the room. Her heart had room for everyone in her life.
Wally passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 30, 2021 at Stonebridge Crossing care home in Saskatoon. She is survived by husband Mark, brother Alvin, three children Linda (Warren) Reimer, Dave (Judy) Cubbon, Grant (Brenda) Cubbon, 10 grandchildren, and 16 great grand-children. A service to celebrate her life will be held at the Makwa Community Hall on Saturday October 9 @ 1 pm, followed by a brief lunch. Although we welcome friends and family, during these unusual times we ask that you also consider sharing your condolences at www.jethomasfuneralhome.com in lieu of attending the funeral. Pandemic protocols, including masks, will be in place while attending the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Wally’s name to the Canadian Red Cross or the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation.
