Making The Team

Loon Lake officer makes it on Women’s National baseball team

A Loon Lake RCMP officer is a part of the national women’s baseball team and will play in the World Cup Qualifier in Mexico this summer.

Const. Heather Healey was one of 20 athletes named to be a part of the national team headed to the Pan American Baseball Confederation (COPABE) Women’s Baseball World Cup Qualifier in Aguascalientes, Mexico on August 18 to 25.

“The World Cup is definitely not an everyday experience,” Healey said. “It’s a completely different mindset, a completely different game you have to prepare for.”

If the team makes it through the qualifier, it will be the third time Healey has played in the women’s baseball World Cup. Healey was a part of the Canadian team when they faced Australia in the bronze medal game and lost in 2014. She was also a part of the team when they received the silver medal in their game against Japan in 2016.

“Each year you get a little bit more comfortable being on the team,” Healey said. “I remember my first couple of years on the team I was really nervous and a lot of the older players were intimidating but I think I might be a little bit intimidating to a lot of the 17-year-olds that are on the team now. You just get more comfortable and you learn as you go.”

The World Cup happens every two years but Healey, originally from Newfoundland, wasn’t able to compete last year as she was training with the RCMP in Regina. Healey said she’s been training on her own to prepare for the World Cup Qualifier.

“I trained with the Meadow Lake White Sox this past season and they really helped me get ready for the tryouts,” Healey said. “We had some practices but other than that I’ve been working out and training on my own here.”

Canada is ranked second in the World Baseball Softball Confederation world rankings. The schedule and full list of participating teams for the qualifier have not been released yet.

Healey enjoys being involved with sports and organized a U-15 hockey tournament on Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation in March.
