Back to School, Back to Culture!Teepee Monument Opening Ceremony was held recently at Onion Lake School.

The Virtues and Community Belonging Project team is inviting the public to the Opening Ceremony for a symbolic teepee monument on September 3rd at 1:00 pm.

Families have donated metal tablespoons that will be hung onto the monument to create a giant wind chime in the heart of the community, near the intersection and four directions in Onion Lake Cree Nation.

Each spoon is engraved with a family name and a community virtue that will be practiced at home.

The first set of spoons will be hung onto the 31.5-foot metal structure that was constructed to increase parental engagement in the education system by celebrating identity and belonging with families in the community.

Families and community virtues will be celebrated annually at the monument on Family Day.

The opening ceremony will take place at the monument site located in front of the Kihew Waciston Cree Immersion School in Onion Lake Cree Nation. The first set of tablespoons will be hung onto the monument during the ceremony.

The concept for this monument was adapted from a project commissioned by the British Ironworks Centre that aired on an episode of the television series, Escape to the Country. The monument was designed and constructed by community members and took two and a half years to complete.

The Virtues and Community Belonging project team includes Eagleview Comprehensive High School staff :Peggy Harper, Brenda Rediron-Chocan, Nelson Carter and Aron Strumecki; Onion Lake Department of Education staff: Terry Clarke; and Onion Lake RCMP Community Program Officer, Laili Yazdani.

The project was funded bythe RCMP Family Violence Initiative and Onion Lake Cree Nation
