Slow progress continues in northwest fields

Despite some unfavourable weather over the past seven days, some producers were able to make marginal progress in the field.

Saskatchewan Agriculture said 42 per cent of the crop is in the bin, up from 34 last week but well behind the five year average of 73 for this time of year.

The latest crop report said an additional 49 per cent of crop is now swathed or ready to combine. Producers in the region are using grain dryers as much of it has come off tough or damp and will need to be conditioned for storage.

“The region will need several weeks of dry and windy weather to continue with harvest progress and get the rest of the crop off,” the report said.

Very little precipitation was received last week. The Duck Lake, Mayfair and Meadow Lake areas received two mm and the Spiritwood and Pierceland areas saw eight.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to frost. Excess moisture and sprouting in the field is resulting in downgrading. Geese and wildlife are also feeding on swathed crops and causing damage.

Provincially, 78 per cent of crop is combined, up from 55 last week but still well behind the average of 82 per cent.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwest where 71 per cent of the crop is combined. The northeast region has 61 per cent in the bin, the west-central region posted 58 per cent and the southeastern region 55 at per cent. The east-central is lagging the entire province 39 per cent.

Estimated average crop yields for the province are 39 bushels per acre for field peas, 1,413 pounds per acre for lentils, 38 bushels per acre for canola, 23 bushels per acre for flax, 40 bushels per acre for durum, 44 bushels per acre for spring wheat and 65 bushels per acre for barley.
