Positive parenting techniques on offer from expert

Nov 12, 2019 | 2:42 PM

Parenting strategies need to adjust according to a non-profit organization that will be offering help in Meadow Lake later this week.

Thyra Berg is the program manager of Positively Parenting, which is holding Active Parenting NOW, an intensive afternoon class that shows parents how to effectively cooperate with their kids.

Based on community feedback, Berg said some parents say their kids aren’t listening or opening up to them. On occasion, children may even disappear or go missing after disciplinary attempts, or that kids aren’t responsive to instruction.

Parents are needing support and don’t know where to turn.

“I think parenting has changed for the better where rights of both child and parent are both emphasized,” Berg told meadowlakeNOW. “Often in the past there is a punishment based system for raising kids and while that may have worked years ago, that’s not working now.”

Active Parenting NOW class touches on healthy communication strategies, setting guidelines and boundaries to build trust and effective discipline versus punishment.

The class is intended for parents with children ages five through 12. Though discipline and boundaries will be discussed, these skills can be useful for parents of teens as well.

The class is offered approximately twice per year and the next class is being offered on Nov.16 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 201 Second Street W. Registration is required by calling (306)236-4804.

The class is confidential and therefore no information will be released on participants.
