Ice rebuild underway at Westview Outdoor Rink

Dec 5, 2019 | 5:15 PM

There will be no outdoor skating until the city maintains ice at the Westview Outdoor Rink.

Kevin Arnold, Meadow Lake Parks and Recreation foreman said the public should be cautious of heavy equipment and using the rink before its ready.

“I do have signs posted which is new this year for people to stay off the ice while we’re doing maintenance,” he said. “But if people want to go out when it’s not a finished product, it’s entirely up to them, it may end up wrecking skates.”

City workers face 12 to 20 applications of hose floods to fill the rink while smoothing rough obstacles with a Zamboni. It is unclear how many gallons of water the city uses to fill three surfaces at Westview rink.

With cold temperatures on the way, Arnold said he is confident he’ll meet the Dec. 13 deadline.

“You’ve got to be aware, we don’t have eyes in the back of our heads while we’re operating equipment out there, just be careful in that area,” Arnold said.

According to the city’s website, during December and possibly January, the heated change room will not be open on Wednesdays or Fridays.

A bench and rubber matting will be available outdoors as a changing area.
