Cameron Whitcomb takes home top honours at Canadian Country Music Awards

Whitcomb has said the inspiration for his music stems from his own addiction strife. One song off his album, “Options,” chronicles a never-ending temptation to relapse and the associated risks — one being death.

He previously told The Canadian Press that being open about his journey resonates with fans, and that they’ve played a big role in helping him get clean and stay sober.

“As soon as I stopped writing for what I thought people might want to hear and I just started writing the truth and my truth … it’s been a huge thing,” he said.

“People really resonate with that kind of honesty.”

Saskatchewan artists shutout

While several artists from the province were nominated in the major categories, they were shutout at this year’s awards.

Meghan Patrick, from Bowmanville, Ont., took home best female artist, beating out fellow nominee Jess Moskaluke from Rocanville.

Prince Albert’s Josh Stumpf was nominated for breakthrough performer, but the award went to Sully Burrows of Parry Sound, Ont.

The 19-year-old is one of the youngest performers to be nominated at the CCMAs.

“This is a moment I’ll cherish forever,” he said during the broadcast.

Ahead of the win, Burrows said he began writing songs at 15 and started booking gigs at local bars and restaurants. At 17, he passed up going to university and instead signed a record deal.

“I picked music first, and I’m really glad that I did,” he told The Canadian Press.

Ontario’s Nate Haller and Alberta’s Tenille Townes took home the award for best musical collaboration for their song “Backfire,” a driving and heartfelt anthem about trying, yet failing, to win back lost love.

Husband-and-wife duo MacKenzie Porter and Jake Etheridge captured video of the year for their work as Thelma & James for “Parking Lot Prayers,” about begging God for a sign when the going gets rough. They also won best alternative country album.

Awards show hosts James Barker Band won the coveted fans’ choice award over Stumpf, and best group —their fourth consecutive win in the category.

Additionally, Bart McKay from Saskatoon was nominated for record producer of the year, for singles by Julia Vos, Rosewood Ave., and Chevy Beaulieu. But, it was awarded to Karen Kosowski from Winnipeg, Man.

The night began with the Hunter Brothers, from Shaunavon, and a rousing performance of their Canadian radio hit ”Born and Raised,” alongside fellow Saskatchewan singers Jess Moskaluke, Kalsey Kulyk and Tenille Arts. The broadcast also featured performances by Dean Brody, Owen Riegling and The Strumbellas.

Patrick Roach of “Trailer Park Boys” fame made a cameo. So too did the TikTok-famous Elle Grzeda of “Elle’s Cafe.”

Along with the awards and the kooky tipping of a watermelon hat — a reference to Saskatchewan’s love for Roughriders football — viewers were treated to a musical tribute to American country icon Dolly Parton, who died Aug. 26 at age 80.

Singers Sacha and Madeline Merlo, clad in orange, green and white ’70s-inspired dresses and pantsuits, serenaded the crowd with Parton’s 1971 hit “Coat of Many Colors” against a red and orange neon backdrop.

Brett Kissel and Tyler Joe Miller joined in with a soulful rendition of her crossover smash “9 to 5.”

“We love you, Dolly!” Sacha said as the tribute came to a close.

Other industry awards include Fred Dionne (francophone artist of the year) and Shannon Ella (country personality of the year).

Jess Moskaluke’s big news

While Moskaluke didn’t go home with any awards last night, the event wasn’t all disappointment for the Saskatchewan country singer.

Moskaluke was invited to make her Grand Ole Opry Debut on Oct. 29 on live television.

Before receiving that surprise, though, she shared some advice for those young girls who say they want to be just like her.

“That is such an honour. But, I would say to them, don’t be me. Be you. Just find out whoever you are and learn who that is, and just be them unapologetically,” she said.

For Dillon Presceksy, who came to the awards show most looking forward to meeting Moskaluke, it’s her relatability that makes him such a fan.

“There’s nothing you can’t love,” he said. “Her personality is incredible.”
