Replacement of Northland Pioneer Lodge

Call for tender to replace Northland Pioneer Lodge

Dec 20, 2019 | 1:05 PM

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is proceeding with a provincial budget commitment to develop a new long-term care facility in Meadow Lake. The SHA issued a call for tenders for construction of that structure.

Neal Sylvestre, executive director of Continuing Care, Northwest SHA said the new project will avoid the current institutional model of the existing Lodge design.

“In the new project there will be six individual homes that will accomodate 12 residence in each of those homes. In the center of those individual homes there will be a central core or mall that will be accessible to all of residents for general gathering,” Sylvestre said.

The work consists of the construction of a 72-bed long-term care home to replace the current 53-bed Northland Pioneers Lodge (NPL), yard equipment storage building, parking lot, and roadway. The building is a single storey with full crawlspace.

“The new building will be on Highway four, just on the northwest end of Meadow Lake between Garth Avenue and Ninth Street West. The size of the building will be 38,535 square feet,” Sylvestre added.

“It’s important to our government to better serve long-term care residents living in rural Saskatchewan, including those of Meadow Lake and surrounding communities,” Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison said on behalf of Rural and Remote Health Minister Warren Kaeding in a press release.

“This project demonstrates our long-standing commitment, as this facility is the last of the 13 long-term care home replacements our government announced in 2009.”

“Residents, their families and staff at the new home will experience a more comfortable and modern environment,” Derek Miller, the executive director of infrastructure management at SHA said. “We are pleased to be moving forward with construction of the new facility in partnership with the City of Meadow Lake, Rural Municipality of Meadow Lake and the Ministry of Health.”

The 2019-20 Saskatchewan budget included $12 million toward finalizing the design and initiating construction for a new long-term care facility in Meadow Lake.

Construction is to begin early in the new year, with completion in the fall of 2021.

The project is led by the SHA and Ministry of Health. Consultation continues with representatives of the city and R.M. of Meadow Lake, Flying Dust First Nation, Meadow Lake Tribal Council and other community partners.
