Dallyn said 10 of the team’s 12 players are returning from last season, when Carpenter High School won the championship. That experience helped the team start the new season with confidence and a strong sense of what it takes to compete.

“It’s that veteran presence that we have from our leaders and our seniors kind of pushed the play all weekend, and it was really good to see we were able to get everyone on and play a whole bunch of different lineups, and there wasn’t much drop-off, so it was pretty special that way.”

Dallyn highlighted Grade 12 student Brett Ackerman and Grade 10 student Luke Treptow for their performances throughout the tournament.

“Brett Ackerman… He was lights out this weekend. He was hitting balls; putting balls away for us. He was playing good defence, and he showed a lot of good leadership out there,” Dallyn said. “Luke Treptow… first weekend setting with the squad and part-time setting with his brother, and he had a really good showing. His offence really came along and then his defence really took over in that final to help give us a boost where we needed it.”

The team currently practices for two hours, three times a week, while competing twice each weekend. Players also train individually outside of team practices.

“These guys are kind of volleyball five out of seven days a week. So, it is a pretty demanding schedule throughout the season. We’re going to be bringing a lot of guys in to help challenge these guys as well, to keep them on their game,” Dallyn said.

With a demanding schedule ahead, Dallyn said the team is focused on continuing to improve the small details during practice. He said that commitment will be important as the team looks to build on its strong start and have a successful and enjoyable season.

The team will be back in action this weekend at a tournament at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.
