Saskatchewan's Strong Communities Program

City Council allocates $500 donation to Hospital Foundation

The City of Meadow Lake has allocated funds to the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation.

In October of 2017, Travelodge announced the Saskatchewan’s Strong Communities Program, where donations of $500 per year for three years would be allocated to 24 different Saskatchewan communities. Meadow Lake was a recipient.

Diana Burton, the city’s manager said at Monday’s council meeting, the funding came as a surprise.

“Travelodge said they want to give $500 for council to give to an organization that fills a need in the community. In our discussion, there are a vast number of those organizations in our community, it’s hard to pick,” Burton said.

The donation can be used to help fill needs in the community – either improvements to municipal recreation facilities or to support external community organizations.

In 2017, council allocated the first $500 donation to the Door of Hope. In 2018, the grant was allocated to the newly opened Youth Center. The third and final year’s payment of $500 has now been issued to the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation.

“When we clarified this with them [Travelodge] last year, it does not have to be a community organization, it can just be filling a community need, so you could give it to yourselves to put towards the parks and recreation department,” city clerk Jessica Walters clarified to council.

Council deliberated where funds could be allocated since the city is in a deficit and the purchase of a used hydrovac truck has increased by approximately $8,000 in the 2020 budget.

“It’s money we don’t have but it’s still a worthy cause,” said councillor Conrad Read.

The next council meeting is on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
